Dr. Swaminath, MD serves as the Chief of GI at LHH and Director of the IBD Program. He is a practicing gastroenterologist with a clinical practice focused on treating patients with Crohn s and colitis, a major contributor to the gastroenterology fellowship training program at Lenox Hill Hospital, and with an appointment as an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Dr. Swaminath provides multidisciplinary care for complex patients, leads the multidisciplinary IBD case conference, and is the principal investigator on a number of phase III clinical trials.

In addition to authoring numerous original clinical, translational, and review articles, Dr. Swaminath is a sought after speaker in the field of inflammatory bowel diseases. He has served as a NYC Crohn s and Colitis Foundation Chapter Medical Advisory Committee chair and currently participates as a member of the national scientific advisory Professional Education Committee. He has been featured on television news, and numerous print and online media.

Jerome D. Waye, MD retired 3 years ago from active practice as a full time endoscopist at Mount Sinai Hospital. He began private practice in 1963 and is a Professor Emeritus. He developed many techniques in colonoscopy and has been one of the best known teachers of endoscopy having participated in many live courses throughout the world. While in private practice he published over 200 papers and wrote 7 books. He was one of the co-founders of the NYSGE and has been president of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, president of the American College of Gastroenterology and president of the World Endoscopy Organization. He is currently successfully training endoscopists in Uganda via zoom, being the first person to teach endoscopy remotely.

Francis A. Farraye, MD, MSc is Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. He received his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He completed an internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and a Master’s Degree in Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Farraye has an active academic clinical practice managing patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. A frequent speaker and invited lecturer on topics on the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease, Dr. Farraye has authored or co-authored over 450 original scientific manuscripts, chapters, reviews, and abstracts. He is the series editor for the text Curbside Consultation in Gastroenterology and co-wrote the text, Curbside Consultation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Gastrointestinal Emergencies. His newest book for patients is Mayo Clinic on Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. He is the Editor in Chief for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Journal Scan published weekly by the ASGE. Dr. Farraye is an ASGE and AGA Fellow, and a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology. He has served on numerous national and international committees. The New England Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation named Dr. Farraye Humanitarian of the Year in 2003. In 2009, the ACG awarded Dr. Farraye the William Carey Award for service to the college. In 2020, Dr. Farraye was a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

Juan Carlos Bucobo, MD is a nationally recognized clinician and educator in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, specializing in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoluminal stent placement, and deep small bowel enteroscopy.  He has recently joined Northwell Health as the Vice President for Gastroenterology Services and is overseeing the expansion of GI throughout the health system.

Maurice A. Cerulli, M. D. FACG, FASGE, AGAF, FACP is currently Clinic Preceptor at Northwell Gastroenterology.  He was Fellowship Program Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology for 10 years until 2018 and is Associate Professor of Medicine,  at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell.  After graduating from Cornell University, he received the Doctor of Medicine degree from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine and completed the residency in Internal Medicine at State University-Kings County Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.  He then did a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. 

Dr. Cerulli was appointed as a commissioner by the Director of the National Institutes of Health to the National Commission on Digestive Diseases in 2006.  The Commission was authorized by an act of Congress.  As one of the sixteen Commissioners, he helped in the drafting of the strategic plan for research in intestinal and liver disease for the NIH, serving as sub editor on the chapters on diseases of the small intestine and diseases of the liver.  This report was presented to Congress in early 2009 and serves as a source document for planning research in digestive diseases. He has also testified before Congressional appropriation committees for research funding in intestinal and liver disease.  As president and then member of the executive committee of the Digestive Disease National Coalition, he has been active at the national level in colon cancer prevention and has been a member of the Steering Committee of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable.  He was invited to the White House for President William Jefferson Clinton’s address on colon cancer prevention in October 2000.  He worked with Charles Rangel, representative from Harlem, to add colonoscopy screening to prevent colon cancer to the benefits allowed by Medicare. 

Dr. Cerulli has been a member of the Governing Board of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, a member of the Health and Public Policy Committee and was the ASGE delegate to the AMA House of Delegates for 18 years.  He was a governor and then regional administrative governor for the American College of Gastroenterology.  He was a member of the Public Policy Committee of the NY Chapter of the ACP.  He has been President of the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and twice served as course director for the annual New York course and has been part of the NYSGE course faculty since 1984.  He has lectured nationally and internationally at academic medical centers.  Dr. Cerulli is a fellow of the ASGE, the ACG, the AGA and the NYSGE.

A nationally recognized hepatobiliary and abdominal organ transplant surgeon, Nabil Dagher, MD recently joined Northwell Health as Vice President and Director of the Transplant Center, Co-Director of the newly established Northwell Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation that will serve as a system-wide center of excellence for liver disease and transplantation, and Surgical Director of the Liver Transplant Program.  Dr. Dagher most recently led NYU Langone’s abdominal transplant surgery program and was surgical director of its liver transplant program. Prior to joining the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, Dr. Dagher spent eight years at Johns Hopkins Hospital, first as a fellow and later as director of its living donor liver and kidney transplant programs. 

Dr. Dagher has vast experience in the field of liver transplantation and has developed extensive expertise in living donor liver transplantation for both adults and children.  A leader who believes strongly in the importance of multidisciplinary care and close collaboration between medical and surgical colleagues, he has spearheaded tremendous growth and excellent outcomes in regional abdominal transplant programs.  He is active in several national and international transplant societies and maintains close ties with the local transplant community.

Dr Bethany DeVito has been part of the Northwell Health GI Faculty since 2004. She is currently the Medical Director of Northwell Health Endoscopy Center of Long Island and the Associate Chief of GI of North Shore/LIJ Hospitals. Her main focus of interest are on women’s GI health, colon cancer screening, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and GERD.

Lisa Garcia MSN ANP-BC and AGACNP-BC has been an acute care nurse practitioner with Northwell for thirteen years.   Her expertise has been with pulmonary medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, inpatient gastroenterology, and now is in a leadership role with occupational medicine.  Lisa remains per diem with inpatient gastroenterology at Peconic and is gaining experience with the transplant service at Manhasset.

Dr. Hatef Massoumi is a transplant hepatologist and Associate Professor of Medicine. He graduated from the Iran University of Medical Sciences. He finished his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at Our Lady of Medical Center/New York Medical College, currently known as Montefiore Wakefield Division. He did a year of Transplant Hepatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. In 2007, he returned to Montefiore and was part of the team that started the Montefiore Liver Transplant Program. He stayed there for 15 years until he joined Northwell as Clinical Director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at Lenox Hill. His primary interest is in the care of critically ill patients with liver disease and immune-mediated liver diseases, focusing on the minority population.

Johanna Medina is a Family Nurse Practitioner who specializes in Liver and Kidney Transplantation at the Northwell Transplant Center. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Pace University in 2009. She earned her Master of Science degree from Molloy College in 2021. She holds a national board certification with the American Nurses Credentialling Center (ANCC) as a Family Nurse Practitioner. As a nurse and nurse practitioner, she has over 10 years of combined transplantation experience in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. She is an active member of the Nurse Practitioner Association of Long Island and the American Nurses Association.

I am a third tier trained therapeutic endoscopist and I am also trained, and board certified in clinical nutrition. In addition, I am a trained bench lab and clinical research scientist, having completed a three-year research fellowship at the Digestive Disease Section of the NIDDK. I have had continuous NIH funding for the last 20 years until this year. I currently hold the position as Chief of Gastroenterology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. I have spent much of my research career as head of endoscopic research at both Thomas Jefferson University and at Temple University in Philadelphia. I am currently involved in the bioelectronics initiative at the Feinstein Research Center. Part of my research interests is the design and invention of devices. I have invented and patented several different devices. In
the early 1990’s, I invented a method using simultaneous high-resolution ultrasound and manometry to study the anatomy and physiology of gastrointestinal sphincters. I have spent the last 30 years of my academic career using this technology to study the anatomy and physiology of gastrointestinal sphincters. As part of my previous NIH sponsored research work,I studied the mechanics, physiology, and pathophysiology of the high-pressure zone of the distal esophagus. My first RO1 grant dealt specifically with normal sphincter anatomy and physiology of the distal esophageal anti-reflux barrier. My second NIH RO1 grant clinically investigated the pathophysiology of GERD and we discovered several new pathophysiologic mechanisms in GERD. My recently completed NIH SPARC grant used new endoscopic techniques to implant electrodes on the peripheral branches of the vagus nerve. It was through this work and my collaboration with Dr.Zanos that I became interested in the selective stimulation of efferent and afferent nerve fascicles within the cervical vagus nerve. We have been able to demonstrate selective relaxation and contraction of the gastric pyloric muscle and the lower esophageal sphincter using radial platinum electrodes to stimulate selective nerve fascicles, varying the location, amplitude, and frequency of stimulation. I have successfully administered the projects (e.g., staffing, research, budget), collaborated with other researchers, and produced many peer-reviewed publications from these projects. As a result of these previous experiences, I am aware of the importance of frequent communication among project members and of constructing a realistic research plan, timeline, and budget. I am a member of the Feinstein Institute for Medical research
and have a lab at the Feinstein with access to their animal facility. In summary, I have a demonstrated a record of accomplished and productive research projects in an area of high relevance and my expertise and experience have prepared me to accomplish the proposed project.

Dr. Aurora Pryor is Surgeon in Chief at Long Island Jewish Hospital and System Director for Bariatric Surgery at Northwell Health.  She grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and received her undergrad degree in engineering and her MD from Duke University. She completed her residency in General Surgery at Duke, followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery. She was on the faculty at Duke from 2003-2011. She held multiple leadership roles at Duke. Moving to New York in 2011, she served as Vice Chair of Surgery, Chief of Bariatric, Foregut and Advanced GI Surgery and Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center at Stony Brook from 2011-2022. She was also director of the Advanced GI/MIS/Bariatric/Foregut fellowship at Stony Brook.

Dr. Pryor was the 2019-2020 President of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). She has also served as the SAGES Treasurer, Finance Chair, Membership Chair and the Research and Career Development Chair, among other roles. Dr. Pryor currently serves on the American Board of Surgery as a Councilor and as the Vice Chair of the General Surgery Board. She is also Chair of the In Training Exam Committee and Chair of the Video Based Assessment (VBA)Task Force. In addition, Dr. Pryor serves the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) as the NY chapter President.  She has served multiple national leadership roles within ASMBS including as a member of the Executive Council from 2014-2017.  She is past President of the Eastern Long Island Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the Fellowship Council. Previous Fellowship Council roles have included Secretary/Treasurer, First and Second Vice-President. She is an Associate Editor for Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, has served as Subject Editor for Surgical Endoscopy.  She serves on the editorial boards of Annals of Surgery and the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. In 2021, she started the Women’s Leadership in Surgery Society for which she is the inaugural President.

Dr. Pryor’s work has appeared in more than 250 publications, and she has co-edited four textbooks. She has given more than 300 presentations worldwide, has received a number of research grants and holds patents for several surgical technologies, including the Transenterix SPIDER single port system. Her current research efforts focus on advancing laparoscopic bariatric and GI surgery techniques and outcomes, and on new technology in surgery. Her clinical care focuses on individualized treatment options of patients with gastroesophageal diseases, obesity and hernia. She offers a range of laparoscopic, endoscopic and traditional surgical approaches. She has actively engaged in several FDA trials and offers the latest available treatment options to her patients.

Dr. Ramona Rajapakse is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine, Hofstra, Northwell. She graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. She completed her medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in England and Lenox Hill hospital in New York where she trained under the mentorship of Dr. Burton Korelitz. She held a faculty position at Stony Brook University Hospital in New York for 20 years, where she was a clinical director, faculty senator, chairperson of QA, developed the IBD service, the fellowship IBD and GI curriculum, and initiated and became a director of the multidisciplinary Stonybrook IBD center. Her clinical practice and research interests are focused on IBD. In addition, she is an active advocate for patients through the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation and the public affairs committee of the ACG. For her work with patients, the CCFA honored her with a distinguished physician award in 2020.

In 2019 she was recruited to initiate a Gastroenterology Fellowship at Mather hospital, Northwell Health where she is now program director, and where she continues her role as an educator, clinical researcher and clinician with a special interest in IBD.

Dr. Kara Raphael is the GI lead for the Pancreatic Cyst and High Risk Screening Program within the Pancreas Disease Center at Northwell Health.  She completed her undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis and then obtained her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine.  She completed her internal medicine residency training at Emory before coming to the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell, where she completed both her general gastroenterology fellowship followed by an advanced endoscopy fellowship at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center.  Subsequently, Dr. Raphael joined the Division of Gastroenterology at Northwell Health as one of the advanced endoscopy faculty members and as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell.  Academically, she is interested in identifying risk factors for progression of both pre-malignant and malignant pancreatic diseases, as well as developing novel endoscopic techniques for diagnosis and therapy of these diseases.

Nitzan Roth, MD PhD joined Northwell Health in 2018 to help build the new liver transplant program at North Shore University Hospital. She is the Director of the Women’s Liver Health Program in conjunction with the Katz Institute for Women’s Health. Dr. Roth is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of liver diseases and in the evaluation and care of patients with advanced cirrhosis, liver cancer, or acute liver failure, both pre- and post-liver transplantation. Her special interests include prevention and multidisciplinary treatment of alcohol-associated liver diseases; evaluation and management of chronic liver disease during pregnancy and pregnancy-related liver diseases; and long-term health maintenance of liver transplant recipients.

Dr. Roth completed her undergraduate degree at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and received her MD and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Southern California. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training and Gastroenterology fellowship at the Los Angeles County – University of Southern California Medical Center (LAC-USC) from 2011-2017 prior to moving to New York to complete an additional Advanced and Transplant Hepatology fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center from 2017-2018. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the American Society of Transplantation (AST), and the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS). Dr. Roth presents novel findings annually at society meetings and has published articles and book chapters on topics including alcohol-associated liver disease and portal hypertension.

Dr. Sanjaya Satapathy is a Professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University, and Interim Division Chief of Hepatology and serves as the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at the Northwell Health Center for Liver Diseases & Transplantation as well as the Program Director of Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at Northshore University Hospital/Northwell Health.

Dr. Satapathy’s expertise lies in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology, with a specific focus on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis C, post-transplant outcomes, NASH-related complications, sarcopenia, and hepatitis C. He is also a skilled advanced endoscopist proficient in techniques such as EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) and ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography). With an impressive publication record of over 160 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals, Dr. Satapathy’s contributions to the scientific community have garnered significant recognition. He holds an h-Index of 37, an i10-Index of 94, and his work has accumulated over 6189 citations. Dr. Satapathy is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

In addition to his medical qualifications, Dr. Satapathy holds a Masters in Epidemiology and Clinical Investigation from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, showcasing his dedication to research and evidence-based medicine. He has received numerous industry-sponsored clinical research grants, including grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Satapathy is recognized as a Fellow of several prestigious professional associations, including the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE), American College of Gastroenterology (FACG), American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF), and American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (FAASLD). His leadership roles within these organizations demonstrate his commitment to advancing the field of gastroenterology and hepatology.

Currently, Dr. Satapathy serves as the Editor in Chief for Translational Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Associate Editor of Hepatitis B Annual, and Chair of the Education subcommittee for the Clinical Practice Special Interest Group of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Recognized for his outstanding contributions, Dr. Satapathy was named a finalist for the Truly Rising Star Award sponsored by Northwell Health. He has also been honored as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 2021 and 2022, further exemplifying his reputation as an accomplished medical professional.

Hillel Tobias M.O., Ph.D is Professor of Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine and Director of Hepatology at Lenox Hill Hospital. 

Before joining Lenox Hill, Dr. Tobias was Professor of Medicine and Surgery at New York University Langone Medical Center where he was the medical co-founder of the Liver Transplant Service and he served as Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Service for twenty–five years. In addition to his direct patient care work and teaching, Dr. Tobias’ clinical research activities have included the development of improved treatments for hepatitis Band C, studies on immunologic aspects of primary biliary cholangitis, lipid disorders in primary biliary cholangitis, new treatments for ursodiol failures in PBC, viral hepatitis in the drug addict populations of New York City, cryoglobulinemia and hepatitis C, multiple aspects of problems in liver transplantation and treatments for non alcoholic fatty liver disease and liver cancer. Dr. Tobias was chair of the executive committee of the “Be Free” Asian American Hepatitis B Program, a landmark study which investigated prevalence, natural history and treatment options for hepatitis B in 10,000 New York Asian Americans. He is the author of numerous articles, presentations and book chapters on diseases of the liver. 

Dr. Tobias received his undergraduate AB degree with honors at Columbia College and his MD degree from Washington University (St. Louis). He completed his house staff training at the NYU Division of Bellevue. Following his residency Dr. Tobias studied liver disease under the mentorship of Professor Sheila Sherlock at the Royal Free Hospital in London and earned his PhD in liver physiology from the University of London. Dr. Tobias subsequently served as NIH Special Fellow in Liver Disease at the Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, working with Ors. Hans Popper and Fenton Schaffner, after which he returned to New York University. 

Dr. Tobias is a Fellow of the American Association for Study of the Liver (AASLD), a Fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He is a former Chairman of the National Medical Advisory Committee of the American Liver Foundation, and former Chairman of the Board of the Global Liver Institute. 

Arvind J. Trindade is the director of endoscopy at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and an associate professor at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. He is a national leader in clinical care and clinical research in Barrett’s esophagus. Dr. Trindade received his medical degree from Rutgers University-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2006, and completed both his residency in internal medicine and gastroenterology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. He subsequently completed his advanced endoscopy fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
