Dr. Gholami is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Northwell Health. She also serves as the Surgical Director of the Liver Multidisciplinary Clinic, Director of the Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump Program, and Director for Translational Research in Surgical Oncology at Northwell Health with a joint appointment at Coldspring Harbor Laboratory. Dr. Gholami is a board-certified surgical oncologist and surgeon-scientist with an interest in translational research focusing on the role of the tumor microenvironment in hepatobiliary malignancies. Her research laboratory at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory explores mechanisms of immune resistance in liver metastases to develop novel immune augmenting therapies and practice-changing clinical trials to improve patient outcomes with colorectal cancer liver metastases.
Elliot Ian Grodstein, MD, performs transplant and hepatobiliary surgery for children and adults. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Society of Transplant Surgery, Dr. Grodstein keeps a close eye to innovations in transplantation and surgery for the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder.
During his fellowship at University of Wisconsin at Madison, Dr. Grodstein was involved in the early trials of normothermic machine preservation of the liver, a new way of preserving livers so more are available for transplant. Today, he is involved with many organizations, like the United Network for Organ Sharing, that advocate for improvements in transplant and liver care. Some of his greatest joys include serving on patient-level advocacy groups like the Transplant Recipient International Organization, where he can hear the concerns of transplant recipients and find solutions.
Ever since he was a child, Dr. Grodstein knew he wanted to be a transplant surgeon. One day while driving to a football game, his father, a kidney specialist, called a patient who had been on dialysis for seven years. It was their turn to get a life-saving gift—a kidney transplant. By the time they reached the stadium, Dr. Grodstein realized he wanted to be a part of these special moments for the rest of his life.
Dr. Grodstein knows there is no small surgery for any patient. He treats each operation as if it were for a member of his own family—a compassionate approach to care that’s featured in the critically acclaimed Netflix docuseries Emergency NYC. And, since Dr. Grodstein is part of Northwell Health, you can expect access to an entire team of transplant and liver professionals, from radiologists to pathologists to medical doctors, who all feel the same. You may only see Dr. Grodstein—but your unique care plan has been crafted by many experts in the field of liver medicine and hepatology.

I am an Associate Professor at the Center for Immunology and Inflammation, The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. I began to gain academic and research experiences in liver injuries, especially ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, since my Master’s and Doctoral studies. My current research focuses on the role of innate immunity and inflammation in regulating surgical stress-induced organ injury and tumor development, especially in the liver. By employing cutting-edge systems immunology tools, including single-cell transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, we aim to characterize the network of various immune cell types and immune signaling pathways in the haptic immune microenvironment and tumor microenvironment for the development of new therapeutic approaches. I have been published over 65 peer-reviewed articles, with some of them in high-impact journals, such as Nature Metabolism, Journal of Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Cancer Research, and Journal of Immunology. As Principal Investigator (PI), I currently lead two R01 projects generously supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) to investigate the mechanism by which pre-operative exercise therapy protects the liver from surgical stress-induced hepatic injury and cancer development.
