Elliott Grodstein, MD, FACS

View Bio

Elliot Ian Grodstein, MD, performs transplant and hepatobiliary surgery for children and adults. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Society of Transplant Surgery, Dr. Grodstein keeps a close eye to innovations in transplantation and surgery for the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder.

During his fellowship at University of Wisconsin at Madison, Dr. Grodstein was involved in the early trials of normothermic machine preservation of the liver, a new way of preserving livers so more are available for transplant. Today, he is involved with many organizations, like the United Network for Organ Sharing, that advocate for improvements in transplant and liver care. Some of his greatest joys include serving on patient-level advocacy groups like the Transplant Recipient International Organization, where he can hear the concerns of transplant recipients and find solutions.

Ever since he was a child, Dr. Grodstein knew he wanted to be a transplant surgeon. One day while driving to a football game, his father, a kidney specialist, called a patient who had been on dialysis for seven years. It was their turn to get a life-saving gift—a kidney transplant. By the time they reached the stadium, Dr. Grodstein realized he wanted to be a part of these special moments for the rest of his life.

Dr Grodstein is a multi-organ certified transplant surgeon currently on staff with Northwell Health.  He earned his bachelor’s degree from McGill University where he graduated on the Dean’s Honor List.  He then attended medical school at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons.  There, he was active on transplant research protocols with Dr. Mark Hardy and was president of the Allan O. Whipple Surgical Society.  Upon graduation, Dr. Grodstein continued onto general surgical residency at New York University-Langone Medical Center.  He then went on to a productive multi-organ abdominal transplant surgery fellowship at University of Wisconsin. Dr Grodstein and his co-authors have published manuscripts in The American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation and other general surgery journals.  He has also authored many book chapters on topics in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation.  He has presented at the American Transplant Congress and the American Society of Transplant Surgeon’s Winter Meeting along with multiple grand rounds.  Dr. Grodstein is specifically interested in donor selection processes and inequities in access to transplantation.

Dr. Grodstein is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Health at Hofstra University/Northwell Health.  He is also the Program Director for the Transplant Fellowship Training Program.  Dr. Grodstein was lead liver transplant surgeon on the state liver transplant application and was integral in starting the liver transplant program at Northwell. Dr. Grodstein holds positions in regional and national organizations including Secretary-Elect, New York Center for Liver Transplantation (NYCLT); former Representative, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Region 9; Regional Representative, OPTN Kidney Transplantation Committee, Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN); and former Member of the National Liver Review Board, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
