Liron Sinvani, MD, AGSF, FHM, is a professor of medicine and nationally recognized clinician-scientist dedicated to improving care for older adults. As a board-certified geriatrician and internist, she brings dual clinical expertise to the study of dementia, delirium and oropharyngeal dysphagia during hospitalization—a period of heightened vulnerability for adverse outcomes in older adults.
Dr. Sinvani is the founding co-director of the SinMak Lab for Aging Research, the research engine of the Northwell Institute for Healthy Aging. Since 2019, she has served as principal investigator or multi-principal investigator on seven NIH-funded grants from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Nursing Research and serves as co-investigator on the NIA-funded Northwell Roybal Center for Personalized Trials and an NIA/NINDS R01 on stroke outcomes. Her landmark study on dysphagia diets in patients with dementia, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, was featured in The New York Times and led to the establishment of the Nancy and Neal S. Kaplan Dysphagia Program at Northwell—the first hospital-based program of its kind.
Dr. Sinvani has been elected to serve as chair of the American Geriatrics Society Annual Meeting Program Committee (2024–2025), is a standing member of the NIH Aging Systems and Geriatrics (ASG) study section and was selected for the NIA Butler-Williams Scholars Program and the Tideswell/AGS/ADGAP Emerging Leaders in Aging Program.

Alex Makhnevich, MD, is a leading physician-scientist whose research is directly inspired by the clinical challenges of caring for complex older patients. His work is centered on improving the care of hospitalized older adults by developing rigorous evidence and leveraging technology and artificial intelligence to improve patient-centered outcomes.
Dr. Makhnevich is the founding co-director of the SinMak Lab for Aging Research, the research engine of the Northwell Institute for Healthy Aging. He serves as principal investigator or multi-principal investigator on multiple NIH-funded grants from the National Institute on Aging, including studies focused on oropharyngeal dysphagia in hospitalized patients with dementia, caregiver burden reduction and physical activity interventions in older adults with cognitive impairment. His landmark study with Dr. Sinvani on dysphagia diets in patients with dementia, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, was featured in The New York Times and led to the establishment of the Nancy and Neal S. Kaplan Dysphagia Program at Northwell.
Dr. Makhnevich’s expertise spans machine learning model development, electronic health record data harmonization and digital health interventions. He has developed innovative EHR-based methods combining diagnosis codes, nursing documentation, natural language processing and surrogate markers to identify conditions that are traditionally under-documented in hospitalized older adults. He is also a dedicated medical educator, recognized with multiple teaching awards throughout his career.
