David E. Bernstein, MD, FACG is the Head of the Liver Sub-Specialty Service Line, Vice Chair of Clinical Trials, Chief, Division of Hepatology, and Director of the Sandra Atlas Bass Center for Liver Diseases for the Northwell Health System. He is a Professor of Medicine and Educational Science at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
Dr. Bernstein graduated from SUNY-Stony Brook School of Medicine, completed his medical residency at Montefiore Medical Center and his fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Miami Affiliated Hospitals under the direction of Dr. Eugene Schiff.
Dr. Bernstein’s is a clinical investigator interested primarily in the management and treatment of liver diseases, with most of his work concentrated on developing new treatments for viral hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis and fatty liver disease. Dr Bernstein has authored or co-authored more than 300 original scientific manuscripts, reviews, book chapters and abstracts. He has been the principal investigator in more than 200 clinical trials.
Dr. Bernstein has been involved in shaping public policy and education regarding liver diseases in New York State. He served as a special consultant to the New York State Department of Health and in that role has helped develop and implement New York State’s 5-year Strategic Plan for Viral Hepatitis as well as work with the group developing the guidelines used for the treatment of hepatitis C in New York State. He regularly leads telemedicine conferences for public health providers, prison health providers and federally qualified health care centers to educate these providers and has made himself available as a special consultant to these centers for individual case questions.
Dr. Bernstein served two terms as ACG Governor for Long Island, is the co-director of the ACG Hepatology School and the ACG Hepatology Circle and has served on numerous ACG committees over the past 25 years. He was named the American Liver Foundation Physician of the Year in 2016 and has been honored by Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of New York, the Nassau County Holocaust Memorial Center, North Shore University. In 2015, he was the recipient of the SUNY-Stony Brook School of Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award.
He and his wife, Helen, live on Long Island, New York and have remained active in community affairs supporting many non-profit organizations. His greatest joys are enjoying spending time with his two adult children, playing golf and tennis, hiking and birdwatching and traveling with his family.

Dr. Swaminath, MD serves as the Chief of GI at LHH and Director of the IBD Program. He is a practicing gastroenterologist with a clinical practice focused on treating patients with Crohn s and colitis, a major contributor to the gastroenterology fellowship training program at Lenox Hill Hospital, and with an appointment as an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Dr. Swaminath provides multidisciplinary care for complex patients, leads the multidisciplinary IBD case conference, and is the principal investigator on a number of phase III clinical trials.
In addition to authoring numerous original clinical, translational, and review articles, Dr. Swaminath is a sought after speaker in the field of inflammatory bowel diseases. David T. Rubin is the Joseph B. Kirsner Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition and the Co-Director of the Digestive Diseases Center at the University of Chicago Medicine. He earned a medical degree with honors at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowships in gastroenterology and clinical medical ethics at the University of Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident and Chief Fellow. He also currently serves as an associate faculty member at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, an associate investigator at the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is a member of the University of Chicago Committee on Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics. He is the chair of the National Scientific Advisory Committee of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, where he also serves as a Board of Trustees member. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Rubin served as the Director of the Fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Chicago for 11 years.
Dr. Rubin is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the American College of Physicians (ACP), and the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh). He is on the Board of Trustees for the ACG. Among numerous awards and honors, Dr. Rubin was chosen by his peers as a member of Best Doctors (recognized for superior clinical ability) and America’s Top Physicians (gastroenterology). Additionally, he twice received the ACG’s Governor’s Award of Excellence in Clinical Research (2003 and 2013), and the UChicago Postgraduate Teaching Award in recognition of significant contributions for fellowship education (2006). In 2012, he received the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Rosenthal Award, a national leadership award bestowed upon a volunteer who has contributed in an indisputable way to the quality of life of patients and families. In 2020, Dr. Rubin received the Sherman Prize for Excellence in Crohn’s and Colitis. He is an Associate Editor of the journal Gastroenterology and Editor-in-Chief of the ACG On-Line Education Universe. In 2018, Dr. Rubin completed the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Leadership Development Course for Physicians.
Dr. Rubin is an editor of a best-selling book Curbside Consultation in IBD which is now in its 3rd edition, is an associate editor of the 11th edition of Sleisenger and Fordtran’s Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease, and an author or coauthor of over 500 articles on treatment and management of IBD, cancer in IBD and novel paradigms, as well as the first author of the 2019 ACG Guidelines for ulcerative colitis. His current research is in the area of biosensor monitoring of IBD, prevention of progressive complications from uncontrolled inflammation, and a variety of collaborative studies related to the causes of IBD and its complications. He is also a featured media contact for issues related to IBD, appearing on satellite radio, television, print media and maintains a popular and verified twitter feed @IBDMD with over 18,000 followers.
Joseph C. Anderson, MD, MHCDS, FACG, is a practicing gastroenterologist at the White River Junction VAMC and a Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College and he is on faculty at the University of Connecticut. He has published over 150 papers on many aspects of CRC screening including risk factors, biology, technical performance, screening of the underinsured and CT colonography. He co-authored the ACG 2009 CRC screening guidelines and is on the U.S. Multi Society Guidelines for CRC screening. He is also a co-investigator in the New Hampshire Colonoscopy Registry which is a statewide database designed to provide data to maximize the efficiency of screening colonoscopy. Dr Anderson completed an Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology Fellowship at Stony Brook University.
Juan Carlos Bucobo, MD is a nationally recognized clinician and educator in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, specializing in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoluminal stent placement, and deep small bowel enteroscopy. He has recently joined Northwell Health as the Vice President for Gastroenterology Services and is overseeing the expansion of GI throughout the health system.

Sara Cerrone MD attended medical school at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency including chief resident year at Hofstra-Northwell’s program at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. She went on to complete a gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at these same institutions where she also served as chief fellow. During her fellowship she completed ANMS (American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society) rotation at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. Currently she is Chief of Gastroenterology at Peconic Bay Medical Center, assistant professor of medicine at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, faculty member of Northwell-Mather Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program and member of Katz Institute for Women’s Health. Dr. Aline Charabaty is the Assistant Clinical Director of the GI Division at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Clinical Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Center at Johns Hopkins-Sibley Memorial Hospital. She completed her residency and GI fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital, where she joined the GI faculty and established and led the IBD center for 13 years before joining the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine faculty in January 2019.
Dr. Charabaty was the Chair of the Greater Washington DC/Virginia Crohns and Colitis Foundation Mission Committee from 2012-2020 and served on the Foundation National Scientific Advisory Committee Patient Education and Physician Education Committees. She currently serves on the Foundation’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She was recognized for her work for the IBD community in 2020 when she received the Excellence in Medicine Award. She is actively involved in educational and advocacy activities and committees with the ACG and AGA, and she is currently the ACG Governor for Washington, DC, and an active member of the AGA Government Affairs committee and ACG Legislative and Public Policy Council. Dr Charabaty uses social media as a medium for medical education and advocacy for the profession of GI and for patients. She is the founder of @MondayNightIBD, a twitter forum that brings clinicians together to discuss the management of complex IBD cases. She received the Healio Gastroenterology Disruptive Innovator Award for that initiative at ACG 2019.
Dr. Charabaty is a strong advocate for diversity in GI and women in medicine and is the co-founder of Scrubs & Heels, an initiative to empowering women in GI with the leadership and professional skills to advance their career. Dr Bethany DeVito has been part of the Northwell Health GI Faculty since 2004. She is currently the Medical Director of Northwell Health Endoscopy Center of Long Island and the Associate Chief of GI of North Shore/LIJ Hospitals. Her main focus of interest are on women’s GI health, colon cancer screening, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and GERD.
Lisa Garcia has been an advanced clinical provider with Northwell Health since 2010 and has served the organization within the departments of Medicine, Gastroenterology-Advanced Endoscopy, and Cardiothoracic Surgery at North Shore University Hospital. She was recruited to Peconic Bay Medical Center in 2021 in order to establish the role of the inpatient Advanced Clinical Provider with the department of Gastroenterology in conjunction with Chief of PBMC GI Dr. Sara Cerrone. Her clinical interests include management of GERD, advanced cirrhosis, and pre- and post-liver transplantation.
Ms. Garcia completed her undergraduate degrees at the University of Wisconsin, received her MSN with specialty in Adult Health at The State University of New York at Stony Brook, an advanced certificate in Adult Acute Care/Gerontology at the University of Pennsylvania, and is currently attending the University at Buffalo where she will earn a Doctorate of Nursing Practice.

Dr. Kara Raphael is the GI lead for the Pancreatic Cyst and High Risk Screening Program within the Pancreas Disease Center at Northwell Health. She completed her undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis and then obtained her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency training at Emory before coming to the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell, where she completed both her general gastroenterology fellowship followed by an advanced endoscopy fellowship at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Subsequently, Dr. Raphael joined the Division of Gastroenterology at Northwell Health as one of the advanced endoscopy faculty members and as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell. Academically, she is interested in identifying risk factors for progression of both pre-malignant and malignant pancreatic diseases, as well as developing novel endoscopic techniques for diagnosis and therapy of these diseases.
Nitzan Roth, MD PhD joined Northwell Health in 2018 to help build the new liver transplant program at North Shore University Hospital. She is the Director of the Women’s Liver Health Program in conjunction with the Katz Institute for Women’s Health. Dr. Roth is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of liver diseases and in the evaluation and care of patients with advanced cirrhosis, liver cancer, or acute liver failure, both pre- and post-liver transplantation. Her special interests include prevention and multidisciplinary treatment of alcohol-associated liver diseases; evaluation and management of chronic liver disease during pregnancy and pregnancy-related liver diseases; and long-term health maintenance of liver transplant recipients.
Dr. Roth completed her undergraduate degree at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and received her MD and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Southern California. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training and Gastroenterology fellowship at the Los Angeles County – University of Southern California Medical Center (LAC-USC) from 2011-2017 prior to moving to New York to complete an additional Advanced and Transplant Hepatology fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center from 2017-2018. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the American Society of Transplantation (AST), and the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS). Dr. Roth presents novel findings annually at society meetings and has published articles and book chapters on topics including alcohol-associated liver disease and portal hypertension.
Dr. Sanjaya Satapathy is currently Professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at the Hofstra University, and serving as the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at the Northshore University Hospital/Northwell Health. Dr. Satapathy’s research focuses on NAFLD, Hepatitis C, post-transplant outcomes, particularly in patients with NASH, sarcopenia, and hepatitis C. Dr. Satapathy is a skilled advanced endoscopist including EUS and ERCP. He has published more than 150 peer reviewed publications in high impact journals (h-Index 30, i10-Index 73, Citations 4671). Dr. Satapathy is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has also earned a Masters in Epidemiology and Clinical Investigation from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center. Dr. Satapathy has received several accolades throughout his career, numerous industries sponsored clinical research grants including grants from NIH and currently a Fellow of American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE), American College of Gastroenterology (FACG), American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF), American Association of the Liver Diseases (FAASLD). Dr. Satapathy is currently the Editor in Chief for Translational Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Associate Editor of Hepatitis B Annual, and is the current steering committee member as well as the Chair of the Education subcommittee for the American Association for the Study of the Liver Diseases, Clinical Practice Sig. Dr. Stein has been a part of Northwell since 2009 when he began his Internal Medicine residency at North Shore/LIJ. He continued his medical training for an additional three years as a Gastroenterology fellow, followed by one year of training in Advanced Endoscopy during which time he participated both as a training fellow and as a junior Gastroenterology attending. Since completing his training in 2016, Dr. Stein has worked at Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, New York (part of the Northwell system) building an advanced endoscopy program. He assumed the role of Director of Advanced Endoscopy that year, taking on administrative duties working to overhaul the endoscopy program. Prior to his medical training, he earned an MBA in Health Systems Administration at Union College, followed by attaining his medical degree at New York Medical College. Maly Tiev, MSN, ANP-BC a board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner with 23 years of experience in hepatology. She has extensive clinical and research experience specializing in acute and chronic liver diseases, has served on numerous advisory boards and speaker bureaus in the past. In addition, she was an assistant professor of medicine at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine for 6 years. She was most recently a Medical Science Liaison for two years with pharmaceutical industries for NASH, primary biliary cholangitis and rare liver diseases in both pediatric and adult population.
Maly received both Bachelor and Masters of Science degree in Adult Nurse Practitioner from Adelphi University in 2009.

Arvind J. Trindade is the director of endoscopy at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and an associate professor at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. He is a national leader in clinical care and clinical research in Barrett’s esophagus. Dr. Trindade received his medical degree from Rutgers University-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2006, and completed both his residency in internal medicine and gastroenterology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. He subsequently completed his advanced endoscopy fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Christopher Vélez, MD is a gastroenterologist practicing within the Center for Neurointestinal Health of the MGH GI division, focusing on the broad category of neurogastroenterology and motility disorders impacting the esophagus stomach, and bowels. He is particularly interested in the diagnosis and medical management of esophageal motility diseases such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, functional heartburn, and achalasia. He collaborates closely with surgical and advanced endoscopy colleagues in the Swallowing, Heartburn, and Esophageal Disease (SHED) Center, including helping improve multidisciplinary collaboration.
Dr. Vélez’s additional clinical and research endeavors include managing the gastrointestinal manifestations of cystic fibrosis, having participated in various Cystic Fibrosis Foundation sponsored initiatives. He is the first gastroenterologist embedded in the MGH Adult CF Clinic, working closely with pulmonologists, dietitians, and therapists. A fluent Spanish speaker, he also has attempted to improve access to gastrointestinal care in the Latino/a community within the greater Boston area, in particular at the MGH Chelsea site. He also studies ways to improve culturally competent care in underserved communities and better understand functional and GI motility disorder manifestation and shared decision making as well.
Having graduated from Harvard College with his bachelor’s degree, Dr. Vélez obtained his medical doctorate from the New York University School of Medicine. He completed his residency, chief residency, and GI fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center, finally coming to MGH to complete a formal advanced fellowship in neurogastroenterology and motility. He serves as the assistant program director of the advanced fellowship in functional and GI motility disorders at MGH, one of only a handful of programs worldwide dedicated exclusively to enhancing subspecialty training in these conditions. Dr. Vélez is intimately involved in fellow education as well. He has authored various book chapters, peer-reviewed work, and lectured locally, regionally, and nationally on various topics related to functional and GI motility diseases.
